The inner image opens a space of associations: from reverie, symbol and imagination, meanings not yet put into words take shape.

What happens in a psychotherapist's mind while listening to a patient? Images, bodily sensations, fragments of films, memories or thoughts may arise, seemingly unrelated to what is being said. In August J. Cwik's view, these can become valuable clinical material through what he calls associative dreaming: a process in which reverie, countertransference, active imagination and the analytic third meet in the therapist's mind. In this article, Simona Cârstoiu analyses the concept through the ideas of Cwik, Wilfred Bion, Thomas Ogden and Carl Gustav Jung.

August J. Cwik și articolul despre visarea asociativăAugust J. Cwik and the paper on associative dreaming

The analysis starts from August J. Cwik's paper, Associative Dreaming: Reverie and Active Imagination, published in the Journal of Analytical Psychology in 2011. The text brings associative dreaming, reverie, active imagination, countertransference and the concept of the analytic third into dialogue. In Simona Cârstoiu's reading, Cwik's contribution becomes relevant precisely through the link between Carl Gustav Jung's tradition and the psychoanalytic developments associated with Wilfred Bion and Thomas Ogden.

Exact aici intervine Cwik. The starting point is a shift in perspective. Countertransference no longer means the therapist's “neurotic reaction”, but the whole fabric of thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations that arise in the analyst - not an obstacle, but an essential source of information about the unconscious process. Jung had already intuited the creation of a “third” in analysis, yet never showed explicitly how it is lived and used clinically. This is precisely where Cwik steps in.

The analytic third (Ogden). A tertiary subject, unconsciously co-created by therapist and patient, that seems to take on a life of its own in the field between them. What surfaces in the session belongs strictly to neither, but is born of their unique encounter. It is the modern echo of what Jung called participation mystique - a psychic interpenetration in which it becomes impossible to say what belongs to whom.

Reveria (Bion). Reverie (Bion). Not daydreaming, but the psyche's capacity to transform raw, unthought sensory experience (beta elements) into material that can be thought and felt (alpha elements). Just as the mother, in her reverie, “metabolises” the infant's experience and returns it digestible, the therapist receives and transforms the patient's unintegrated material - including the most ordinary thoughts, ruminations and sensations, apparently disconnected from what is being said.

Active imagination (Jung). The way the therapist relates to what emerges from the analytic third. It requires a slight lowering of the level of consciousness (abaissement du niveau mental) - an “ego receptivity” that is neither purely active nor flooded by the unconscious, but open to the subtle material rising from the body and the depths. Bion describes an almost identical state when he asks the analyst to give up desire, memory and understanding.

From the integration of these three concepts, associative dreaming is born.

Harta conștiinței terapeutului: manifest, transfer și contratransferThe therapist's map of awareness: manifest content, transference and countertransference

Trei „săgeți”, fiecare cerând un alt tip de răspuns:Building on Jung's “Psychology of the Transference”, Cwik maps the channels through which material enters the therapist's awareness. Three “arrows”, each calling for a different response:

The therapist's map of awareness in associative dreaming: manifest content, transference and living countertransference
ArrowZoneWhat it asks of the therapist
AManifest content - what the patient says directlyClear listening; empathy that also names what is still unspoken
BClassic transference - what emanates from the patient's unconscious (projection, body language, dreams, slips)Decoding derivative communications and linking them to the here-and-now
CLiving countertransference - what rises directly from the therapist's own unconscious and body (reverie, images, sensations)A state of reverie that lets these arise, be observed and engaged in dialogue

Crucially, all three zones are coloured by the analytic third. What arises is co-created, never simply “the patient's”. Hence a healthy epistemic modesty - certainty is not available, and meaning is discovered together.

Visarea asociativă ca proces continuu în psihoterapieAssociative dreaming as a continuous process in psychotherapy

Associative dreaming stretches along a continuum. At one end, ordinary Ogdenian reverie - the thought of who to pick up from the airport, the address on an envelope on the desk. It is precisely from what seems trivial that the most important insights often come. Towards the other end, well-formed images, film scenes, music, myths; and at the far edge, theoretical formulations.

Cwik makes a subtle point here: the further we drift towards theory, the more we risk defending against the deeper affect constellated in the relationship. We would rather think about the patient than feel with them. Theorising can, at times, be a defensive move that pulls us out of reverie and into a comfortable position of mastery.

A vorbi din reverie, nu doar despre reverieSpeaking from reverie, not just about it

Perhaps the paper's most valuable distinction. It is one thing to speak from your inner image or experience; another to speak about it. The choice depends on the patient's capacity to “dream”, in Bion's sense. Ogden distinguishes two classes of patients through the metaphor of sleep disorders.

Those with “night terrors” cannot sleep, and so cannot dream: they live with “undreamt dreams”, unmetabolised material. Here the therapist must dream for the patient. Cwik offers a memorable example: a hypomanic woman who leapt from topic to topic; in the therapist's mind an image kept returning of her as a tiny figure across a deep chasm, taking the shape of Munch's “Scream”. He spoke from the image: “It feels as if there is an impassable gulf between us, and you, on the other side, are trying to express something that cannot be said.” The woman slowed at once and began to weep, speaking of a distant mother who had never understood her.

Those with “nightmares” can dream, but are overwhelmed by pain. With them the therapist can move freely along the continuum, speaking from or about reverie - though, in intensely emotional states, speaking from remains preferable. Speaking about (amplifying a myth or a film scene, say) can create distance; it can be a subtle dissociation from what resonates within. Cwik warns: forced symbolisation is instantly recognisable by its intellectualised, artificial tone.

Funcția transcendentă și busola analiticăThe transcendent function and the analytic compass

When the therapist engages these continuities, what Jung called the transcendent function is activated - the function that mediates opposites. The result is usually not a grand unifying symbol, but a small, gentle opening of awareness that points the way. Ogden speaks of a “leaning towards” rather than an “arriving at”. These are micro-activations of the transcendent function, in the everyday of analytic life.

From here we can also understand the “moments of meeting” described in the Boston Change Process Study Group literature: those experiences of genuine, person-to-person connection that can play an important part in the therapeutic process. To be known is not only to be understood, but also the sense that the therapist responds to the concrete person before them, in a way that cannot be reduced to the mechanical application of an interpretation.

Ideile lui Cwik care schimbă perspectiva terapeutuluiThe ideas of Cwik that shift the therapist's perspective

Beyond the architecture, the paper hides a few rare insights. First: the therapist's dreams about the patient - and the patient's about the therapist - can be self-correcting operations of the analytic third. When the relationship tilts, the “healer” in the patient repairs the “wounded” in the therapist. Searles said, poignantly and precisely, that the patient becomes therapist to the analyst. Cwik calls this, in Jungian terms, supervision by the Self.

Inconștientul pacientului corectase, fără menajamente, folosirea ușor narcisistă a materialului. Sistemul, când ești atent, se auto-reglează.Second: certainty and self-satisfaction after a session deserve suspicion. Cwik recounts how, after an intervention he was rather pleased with, the patient brought to the next session a dream in which the therapist appeared as Gollum from “The Lord of the Rings”. The patient's unconscious had bluntly corrected the mildly narcissistic use of the material. The system, when you pay attention, self-regulates.

Associative dreaming does not mean any thought that arises in the therapist's mind. It becomes clinically relevant when an image, a sensation, a memory or a reverie appears in relation to what is happening in the therapeutic field and can be examined without being mistaken for a truth about the patient. The therapist needs to distinguish between associative material, their own complexes and hypotheses about the other's experience.

A few markers help with this distinction. Recurrence: if the same image returns specifically with a particular patient, it is more likely tied to the dynamic with them. A quality of “otherness”: when the material comes as a surprise, as something foreign to your conscious personality, it is more likely to arise from the shared layers. And, most importantly, validation from the patient: when an intervention born of reverie opens genuine emotion and new material. An essential marker remains the suspension of certainty - an association becomes a working hypothesis, not an automatic interpretation.

The paper asks for more than knowledge: a certain way of being in the relationship. Cultivating the capacity for reverie (through one's own analysis, through active imagination, through contemplation). Knowing one's complexes well enough to tell the purely personal from what belongs to the field. Tolerating ambiguity and staying with the question. Calibrating interventions to the patient's capacity to dream, which shifts from session to session. And, perhaps the finest skill of all, discerning when and how to voice what arises - because not everything in the therapist's mind should be spoken.

Întrebări esențiale despre visarea asociativăKey questions about associative dreaming

Ce este visarea asociativă?What is associative dreaming?

Associative dreaming is the process by which images, sensations, memories and other associations arising in the therapist's mind can become material to observe and explore within the therapeutic relationship, in the perspective presented by August J. Cwik.

How does associative dreaming relate to countertransference?

In this approach, countertransference is seen not only as the therapist's personal reaction, but also as a source of material that can inform the understanding of the unconscious process in the therapeutic relationship.

Ce rol au Jung, Bion și Ogden? What role do Jung, Bion and Ogden play?

Cwik brings the active imagination and transcendent function associated with Jung into dialogue with Bion's reverie and the concept of the analytic third developed by Thomas Ogden.

Este visarea asociativă o tehnică terapeutică?Is associative dreaming a therapeutic technique?

Not in the sense of a mechanically applied technique. In the paper analysed, it describes rather a capacity for receptivity and reflection in the therapist, to be used with discernment and without turning every association into an interpretation.

Limite, precauții și discernământ clinicLimits, cautions and clinical discernment

The approach does not suit everyone. It asks for a therapist with good access to their own interiority; with very fragile patients or in acute crisis, safety and containment remain the priority, not symbolic exploration; and reverie itself can become an “overvalued idea” if the therapist hunts for the analytic third in every stray thought. Balance, discernment, flexibility.

To accompany someone is not to hand them answers, but to dream with them what they could not yet dream alone.

This is, perhaps, Cwik's most beautiful lesson: the therapist's mind is not a neutral mirror but a living space in which the patient's experience can, at last, be thought. And where experience can be thought, it can begin to heal.
