Active imagination as a meeting place between the conscious and the unconscious: the stairway and the lit door, the wolf, the bird, the water and the rooted tree - forms of the symbolic material that can become an agent of transformation.

At 38, at the height of his career - professor in Zurich, president of the International Psychoanalytic Association - Carl Gustav Jung felt he was losing himself. The rational, scientific thinking on which he had built his work no longer helped him understand what was happening within. So he undertook a dangerous experiment: night after night, he gave up rational control and let the images come. From that descent into the dark, one of the most powerful methods of analytical psychology was born - active imagination. A century later, the analyst Murray Stein places it back at the centre of clinical practice, not as a technique but as a true agent of transformation.

Ce este imaginația activă în psihologia jungiană?What is active imagination in Jungian psychology?

Active imagination is a method for entering a conscious dialogue with the images, fantasies and figures that arise from the unconscious - without the ego rigidly controlling them and without becoming wholly passive before them. In Stein's formulation, it is a “living dialogue between the conscious ego and autonomous images from the unconscious”, unfolding in an intermediate psychic space the Jungian tradition calls the mundus imaginalis - a reality that is neither pure fantasy nor the outer world.

It differs from a dream in that you are fully awake and keep your capacity to reflect and to intervene: you do not passively endure a dream narrative, you take part in it. And it differs from mere reverie or fantasy through its deliberate attitude and reflective distance. The key is subtle: you do not control the content of the images - they come from the unconscious and have their own autonomy - but you control your attitude towards them and your degree of engagement in the dialogue. Thus, from something you undergo, active imagination becomes something you contribute to, making you a co-author of your own transformation.

Cum a descoperit Jung imaginația activăHow Jung discovered active imagination

The method's origin cannot be understood apart from the crisis Jung went through between 1913 and 1919, which he himself called “the confrontation with the unconscious”. After the break with Freud, he found himself disoriented, feeling that the whole rational edifice he had leaned on had become too narrow. He then made a brave and risky decision - as a psychiatrist he knew well the danger of dissociation: to “play”, night after night, with imagination, letting the images appear without censorship and without premature interpretation.

From the Red Book (Liber Novus), published only in 2009, we learn what followed. For many evenings nothing happened - and this patient waiting on emptiness was itself part of the process. Only on the twelfth evening did “his eyes open”: Jung sees himself descending into a cave, meets a glowing red stone, hears voices, glimpses the Underworld. A week later he meets two figures - the prophet Elijah and the young blind Salome, accompanied by a black serpent. He discovers that they live in the “Land of the Dead” - the unconscious, where the cultural past remains alive and where time does not flow as it does in consciousness.

One detail is essential for Stein: surprise. Throughout, Jung remains himself - a lucid twentieth-century European who questions, argues, wonders - yet the images do and say things he does not expect and does not control. The ego is not in command; the images show their autonomy. Here lies the criterion that separates authentic active imagination from directed fantasy: if nothing surprises you, you are probably staging it, not listening.

Funcția transcendentă: cum se integrează opozițiileThe transcendent function: how opposites are integrated

In 1916, three years after the experiment, Jung presented his paper “The Transcendent Function” - a bridge between consciousness and the unconscious. Stein's contribution is to show clearly that active imagination is the practical instrument through which this function becomes operational. Through sustained dialogue with the images, tensions that seemed irreconcilable - reason and emotion, independence and closeness, control and surrender - can find a synthetic expression in a symbol that transcends them without cancelling them.

This is not abstraction: a conflict between the need for freedom and the need for connection may be transcended by the symbol of a bridge, which allows both distance and connection at once. The ego does not “solve” the conflict by willpower; rather, from the depths, a third form arises that reconfigures the whole problem.

Condițiile unei practici autenticeThe conditions for authentic practice

Stein is precise about when and for whom active imagination is appropriate. Three conditions must be met, and they carry the weight of a clinical criterion.

The three conditions of an authentic practice of active imagination, according to Murray Stein
ConditionWhat it requiresWhy it matters
A stable egoA coherent identity, firm anchoring in realityYou can withstand the encounter with unconscious material without disorganising
Openness to the unconsciousTolerance of ambiguity, uncertainty and intense affectYou let surface what contradicts your idealised self-image
An ethical attitude toward the imagesTreating them as autonomous others, not projections to controlReal transformation comes from letting them surprise and change you

The third condition is the finest: the images must be treated as autonomous beings with whom you enter into relationship, not as fantasies you shape at will. You cannot use active imagination as an instrument of control over the unconscious. You must accept that the images have something to say - perspectives beyond the ego's narrow horizon - and that real transformation comes precisely from listening to them, even when they challenge you.

Două povești de transformare: Pauli și Kristine MannTwo stories of transformation: Pauli and Kristine Mann

Stein illustrates with two famous cases. Wolfgang Pauli, the Nobel-laureate physicist, came to Jung with an emotional life out of tune with his rational brilliance. After years of dreams and active imagination he wrote “The Piano Lesson” - an imagination in which he finds the harmony between the white and black keys, that is, between his scientific intelligence and his affective world. As long as he stayed in contact with the unconscious, he felt stable and whole; he kept the practice for the rest of his life.

Kristine Mann, an American psychiatrist who came to Jung around the age of 55, practised active imagination through painting. Her first image showed a woman trapped in rock; the second, a lightning bolt freeing a boulder from the stone. For nearly twenty years she painted, often mandalas, letting the “eyes” - not reason - lead. That series of paintings is, Jung says, her individuation process put into images. Both cases show the same thing: active imagination does not produce a sudden revelation but a transformation that settles over time, step by step.

What sets it apart from other ways of working with imagination? In essence, the degree of direction and the view of the unconscious.

Mindfulness, meditationDetached observation of experience, without an agendaActive imagination asks for active engagement in dialogue, not just observing

The difference is not merely technical but philosophical: for the Jungian tradition, the unconscious has a wisdom and a direction of its own - it “knows” what the psyche needs for healing. The therapist's role is not to direct the process but to create the conditions in which it can unfold, and to help the person tolerate and integrate what emerges.

Riscuri și limiteRisks and limits

Precisely because it stimulates the unconscious and temporarily loosens the ego's boundaries, active imagination is not for everyone. The first major contraindication is a psychotic structure or psychotic risk: with a fragile ego, the practice can precipitate a decompensation - Jung himself feared this and came through only because he had a strong ego. Nor is it advised for those who have not completed the “work of the first half of life” - building an identity, a functioning ego, independence.

A second risk is inflation: the ego identifies with a powerful archetypal figure (the sage, the hero, the prophet) and loses its human measure - almost always followed by a brutal compensatory fall. That is why the ego dialogues with these figures and learns from them, but does not become identical with them. And here the presence of an experienced analyst, who recognises the signs and restores perspective, is not a luxury but a safety net.

Întrebări-cheie despre imaginația activăKey questions about active imagination

Ce este imaginația activă?What is active imagination?

A method of analytical psychology for entering a conscious dialogue with the images of the unconscious, while awake, without the ego rigidly controlling them and without remaining passive before them.

How does it differ from a dream and from fantasy?

In active imagination you are fully awake and can intervene and reflect, unlike in a dream; and unlike passive fantasy, you have a deliberate attitude and a reflective distance.

Ce legătură are cu funcția transcendentă?How does it relate to the transcendent function?

Active imagination is the practical instrument through which the transcendent function becomes operational: from the dialogue with the images arises a symbol that integrates psychic opposites.

Pentru cine NU este recomandată?For whom is it NOT recommended?

For people with a psychotic structure or psychotic risk and, as a rule, for those who have not completed building an identity and a stable ego. A prior assessment and the accompaniment of an analyst are essential.

Concluzie: să devenim coautorii propriei viețiConclusion: becoming the co-authors of our own life

Stein's merit is to bring active imagination back from the archive into the consulting room: not a relic, not an esoteric technique, but a living instrument that mediates between reason and affect, between the actual self and the possible one. And, beyond method, a statement about the human condition - that we are not merely mechanisms to be repaired or symptoms to be reduced.

A ne imagina activ înseamnă a înceta să fim doar pacienți ai propriei vieți și a deveni, în sfârșit, coautorii ei.In every person there are resources for healing that wait to be discovered. To imagine actively is to stop being merely patients of our own life and to become, at last, its co-authors.

We are not condemned to remain prisoners of our patterns, of the narrow ego, of conflicts that seem to have no way out. Deep transformation is possible - and active imagination is one of the paths that lead there, provided we set out with an ego strong enough to let itself be surprised, without fear.
