Jean-Paul Sartre: rușinea, privirea și ființa-pentru-celălalt (Ființa și Neantul)Jean-Paul Sartre: Shame, the Look and Being-for-Others (Being and Nothingness)

A phenomenological and ontological analysis of shame in Sartre - why the most philosophical of emotions is the very proof that we exist for the other.

· de · by

Jean-Paul Sartre did not write about shame as one emotion among others. He made it a key to the very structure of human existence. In Being and Nothingness (1943), shame ceases to be a mere psychological discomfort and becomes an ontological revelation: the moment I discover that I exist not only for myself but also for the other - that I have a dimension of my being that radically escapes me, at the mercy of someone else's gaze. It is, perhaps, the most philosophical of emotions: the one that shows us we are never entirely alone.

A note on reading: this page analyses shame in the work of Jean-Paul Sartre, chiefly in Being and Nothingness (L'Être et le Néant, 1943), the chapter on the Look. The interpretations, comparisons and conclusions are Simona Cârstoiu's; some sections deliberately go beyond Sartre's text and are marked as such.

Ce este rușinea la Jean-Paul Sartre? What is shame in Jean-Paul Sartre?

For Sartre, shame is not a psychological emotion but an ontological structure - a fundamental mode of being in the world. It is the experience by which I discover that I have a being-for-others: that I exist, as an object, in someone else's consciousness. His famous formulation is clear: shame is, by nature, recognition - „I recognise that I am as the Other sees me”. It is not a fear of judgement or of reputation, but a confrontation with my own ontological status as an object for another freedom.

Jean-Paul Sartre (1905-1980) was the most influential philosopher of atheistic existentialism, author of the maxim „existence precedes essence” - the idea that the human being has no pre-given nature but defines itself through what it chooses to do, and is thus „condemned to be free”. The analysis of shame appears in his major work, Being and Nothingness, published in 1943, in occupied Paris. Not by chance: the experience of humiliation - partial blindness in childhood, then humiliation in the 1940 prisoner-of-war camp - fed his philosophy of the gaze and of the exposed body directly.

Trei moduri de a fi: în-sine, pentru-sine, pentru-celălaltThree modes of being: in-itself, for-itself, for-others

The whole ontology of Being and Nothingness is organised around two fundamental modes of being. The in-itself (l'en-soi) is the mode of being of things: massive, full, coincident with itself, without consciousness - a stone is what it is, without remainder. The for-itself (le pour-soi) is the mode of being of consciousness: it is never what it is, because it always projects beyond itself, into the future. But Sartre introduces a third mode, decisive for our theme: being-for-others (l'être-pour-autrui) - the dimension of my existence that exists for the gaze and consciousness of another. It is through this third mode that shame appears as an ontological phenomenon.

Sartre offers the most memorable illustration of shame in twentieth-century philosophy. Imagine that, out of jealousy or curiosity, I press my ear to a door and look through the keyhole. I am pure consciousness projected towards the spectacle behind the door; there is no „I” inhabiting my consciousness - I am my jealousy, my curiosity, without distance and without judgement. And, suddenly: footsteps in the corridor. Someone is looking at me.

Deodată aud pași. Cineva era acolo și m-a văzut. Mi-e rușine de mine.Suddenly I hear footsteps. Someone was there and saw me. I am ashamed of myself.

In an instant, the universe collapses and reorganises. The „I”, until then absent from my pre-reflective consciousness, suddenly appears - but not as an I I know, rather as the I-that-the-Other-sees. My gesture, until now a simple lived action, becomes visible, fixable, judgeable. I am no longer the pure freedom that listens; I am the one caught listening. This is shame: the moment I perceive my own being through another's eyes.

Rușine, nu vinovăție: existențial, nu moralistShame, not guilt: existential, not moralistic

The distinction is crucial and links philosophy directly to the clinic. Sartrean shame is not a reaction to the breaking of a moral norm - that would be guilt. It is the confrontation with my ontological status as an object for the other. I can feel shame even when I have done nothing „wrong” in a moral sense: for Sartre, shame is „existential, not moralistic”. It is exactly the distinction clinical psychology will take up - guilt says „I did something bad”, shame says „I am seen, exposed as an object” - only that Sartre gives it an ontological, not a psychological, ground.

Privirea ca structură ontologicăThe Look as an ontological structure

The Look (le regard) must not be confused with physical eyes or with the act of seeing. It is an ontological structure - the way the other constitutes me as an object. That is why the Look is not even necessarily visual: footsteps followed by silence, the movement of a curtain, a half-open shutter can function as a look. What I grasp, when I hear the branches crack behind me, is not that „someone is there”, but that I am vulnerable, that I have a body that can be hurt, that I occupy a place and that I am seen. The Look reveals, before anything, my exteriority - a „face” of my being turned towards the other, which escapes me in principle.

In shame, my body ceases to be the lived body, the transparent instrument through which I am in the world, and becomes a body-object: a spectacle, an image, a configuration of flesh subject to the other's judgement. It is not a matter of perceiving my body as an object (as I would looking in a mirror), but of an ontological transformation - my body becomes what it is for the other. Hence the involuntary physical phenomena of shame: blushing, sweating, trembling, the wish to make oneself small. Blushing is the perfect symbol: I cannot help blushing, precisely because I blush from being seen blushing - a vicious circle of bodily objectification, the visible sign of losing control over one's own image.

Rușinea ca dovadă a existenței celuilaltShame as proof of the Other's existence

Here lies perhaps Sartre's most powerful idea - and his answer to one of philosophy's great problems: how do I know the other truly exists as a subject, and not merely as an object in my world? Husserl had tried through analogy and empathy; Heidegger, through „being-with” (Mitsein), a structure that remained abstract. Sartre gives a radical answer: shame is the non-conceptual, pre-reflective, certain proof of the Other's existence. I do not infer their existence - I live it directly. When I hear the footsteps and feel ashamed, I do not first think „there is probably someone” and then „I should be ashamed”. Shame is immediate, prior to any judgement. And it is precisely this lived certainty that makes it the ontological proof of intersubjectivity.

Sartre's originality shows most clearly in contrast with his great contemporaries. Each thought differently about shame, the body and the relationship with the other.

Note: the section below proposes interpretations that deliberately go beyond the letter of Sartre's text. They are speculative extensions, offered as provocations for thought, not as Sartre's own theses.

Shame as a „collapse” of identity. We might read the moment of shame as the collapse of a superposition: before being looked at, I exist in an indeterminacy of possibilities - I am pure transcendence, an open project; the other's gaze functions as a „measurement” that collapses this indeterminacy into a single fixed state, the object-the-Other-sees. And the collapse is irreversible. It is no accident that Sartre says the „I” does not exist in pre-reflective consciousness: it appears only with the gaze.

Reverse shame and the ethics of the gaze. All analyses focus on the one who feels shame. But what of the one who looks and causes the shame? If my gaze has the power to make the other an object, then it entails a responsibility - my mere presence as a looking-subject can be a form of ontological violence. Here, in germ, is the ethics Levinas will develop: the duty to look at the other without reducing them, respecting their transcendence.

Impossible shame and authentic refusal. Sartre seems to say that the absence of shame would be bad faith. But what of the oppressive gaze that tries to fix me in an image that has nothing to do with who I am - a stigma cast upon an identity, say? Refusing to feel that shame is not bad faith but the authentic affirmation of freedom. Not every gaze has the same ontological authority; not every objectification must be accepted. Here the philosophy of shame becomes, unexpectedly, a philosophy of dignity.

Rușinea în era digitalăShame in the digital age

Sartre writes in a pre-digital world, with a direct, unmediated gaze between two consciousnesses. Today we are looked at constantly - but by cameras, algorithms, networks, data profiles. The surveillance camera's gaze is not consciousness; it is mechanical recording. And yet the knowledge that we are being recorded produces effects akin to shame: we change our behaviour, we become aware of ourselves as visible objects. Sartre's intuition remains valid, though: authentic shame appears only when we imagine that someone - a consciousness - might see the recording. Technology can mediate, amplify and diffuse the gaze, but cannot replace it. And „cancel culture” and public shaming are, in a Sartrean key, forms of extreme collective objectification - a „total gaze” that leaves no room for transcendence, reducing a person to a single gesture beneath the eyes of millions at once.

Though he wrote no manual of therapy, Sartre offers a precise language for existential vulnerability - the moment when I am no longer only „I”, but also my image in the eyes of others. For the clinician, three consequences follow. First, shame is relational, not merely individual: it is born in the space between two freedoms, so it is worked with in the therapeutic relationship, not only in the patient's psyche. Second, shame can be a gateway to authenticity: recognised and owned, it becomes the first form of real contact with the self - we cannot avoid shame without losing our freedom. Finally, shame is an act of knowledge: not merely a symptom to be reduced, but a moment in which a person discovers their own existence as a being-among-beings.

Aici, Sartre completează perfect analiza clinică a rușinii. Here Sartre completes the clinical analysis of shame perfectly. Where Peer Hultberg describes shame as a hidden affect that collapses the word, Sartre gives it its ontological ground: shame falls silent because it is not about what I did, but about what I am beneath the other's gaze - and this „being seen” is deeper than any sentence.

For shame seen from the clinic, see also shame as a hidden emotion in Peer Hultberg and how shame becomes visible in transference and countertransference (Teri Quatman).

Întrebări-cheie despre rușinea la SartreKey questions about shame in Sartre

Ce este rușinea la Jean-Paul Sartre? What is shame in Jean-Paul Sartre?

An ontological structure, not a psychological emotion: the experience by which I discover that I exist as an object for another's consciousness. Shame is, in Sartre's words, „recognition” - I recognise that I am as the Other sees me.

Ce este „privirea” (le regard) la Sartre? What is „the Look” (le regard) in Sartre?

Not physical eyes, but the ontological structure by which the other constitutes me as an object. The Look is not even necessarily visual - a footstep, a moved curtain can function as a look - and it reveals my vulnerability and exteriority, the fact that I am seen.

What is the difference between shame and guilt in Sartre?

Guilt is a moral reaction to a deed; shame is an ontological, pre-moral revelation about my being as an object for the other. I can feel shame even without any moral wrong - it is enough to be seen, exposed.

De ce e importantă rușinea pentru existențialism? Why is shame important for existentialism?

Because it solves the problem of the Other: shame is the direct, lived proof that the other exists as a subject, not merely an object. And because it reveals, at once, my facticity (I am a body that is seen, situated) and my transcendence (I remain a freedom that exceeds any fixed image).

Concluzie: rușinea nu ne micșorează, ne dezvăluieConclusion: shame does not diminish us, it reveals us

Sartre's great lesson is paradoxical. Shame is neither a pathology to be cured nor a weakness to be overcome: it is a fundamental ontological structure - the price we pay for being conscious beings who exist alongside other conscious beings. To try to eliminate it entirely would mean trying to abolish our dimension of being-for-others, that is, to cease being social beings. Shame is the ontological signature of the fact that we are not windowless monads, but open, vulnerable, exposed beings.

Shame does not diminish us, it reveals us. In it we discover not only the other's gaze, but our own humanity.

And if the gaze that turns me into an object is, as Sartre said elsewhere, a kind of hell - „hell is other people” -, then a gaze is also the only way out: one that recognises rather than fixes; that meets the other's freedom without reducing it. Sartre named it only with difficulty. In the consulting room, as in life, we call it, simply, love - or at least that way of being seen without being judged, in which shame can, at last, grow quiet.
